Tarot Card - The Emperor

The Emperor

Upright: Authority, father-figure, structure, solid foundation

Reversed: Domination, excessive control, rigidity, inflexibility

The Emperor is the second leg of the Body-Mind-Spirit triad, representing the power of the mind to shape the world. He is the opposite of the Empress in that he is all about rules, guidelines and structure, he shows us that every rule has an application and a reason for being and once we work out why that is we can understand. The Emperors energy allows us to use our heads when hard choices come our way and he to allows us to maintain our concentration and focus, so that we can move forward with confidence

Most of the Major Arcana can represent people, but the Emperor is the kind of energy that often manifests in the form of a person. Normally any kind of leaders and fathers will harbor some of his influence, but he can also show someone who acts like a father by setting tone and imposing structure. As The Emperor is all about regulating force he is then often associated with the government, bureaucracy and the legal system; and his appearance often indicates an encounter with one or more of these systems. The Emperor can also personify the assumption of power and control, by us or someone close to us. If we are the one in power, we need to take care to always use it wisely. He can also mean that we need to take the next steps just for ourselves and not to benefit others.
